BRHS to the rescue
The national supply chain problems have reached the Boothbay peninsula, but a recent partnership resulted in a win-win for students and local business, Farm 23.
When suppliers could no longer provide Farm 23 with bases for their wedding cakes, Education Board member Tom Minerich connected Farm 23 owner, Laura Pachulski with a fellow Education Boothbay board member and high school STEAM teacher, Chip Schwehm. Farm 23 needed a variety of different diameter circles cut from 1/4" tempered hardboard. According to Chip, “designing and producing the bases was the perfect assignment for the freshman Introduction to STEAM classes.” Using the CAD program Rhino, students were tasked with drawing the most efficient way to use 4' x 8' sheets of hardboard. Zoe Curtis' layout was chosen and students used the CNC router cording to Schwehm, “all students participated in the final processing of the disks. Student computers and the CNC router were purchased with funds from Education Boothbay. It was a win for education, and a win for Farm 23!”
